After years of growing in speaking and reading Arabic, I can confidently say that the sessions with Mary were a tremendous kick start and help to where I am now. She is a kind teacher and has great patience and wisdom in how to develop a student’s learning of the language. For me, learning correct pronunciation and mastering verb development were the most helpful to me in the long run. I spent several summers in Jordan learning colloquial Arabic, and many of the teachers there were amazed by my pronunciation and grasp of verbs (two very difficult areas for beginners in the language). Beyond that, I thoroughly enjoyed conversing with Mary in colloquial Arabic and being able to maintain my ability to speak the language, as it is very easy to lose if you don’t use it. Mary and Tom are a wonderful couple and are very welcoming and hospitable. They are always eager to share life with you and to teach you more than just the language. I highly recommend to anyone interested in learning Arabic as it is rare to find good teachers of Arabic, particularly colloquial Levantine Arabic, in College Station and beyond.

I studied Arabic with Tom and Mary for three years during high school. Not only did I learn a substantial amount of practical Arabic, but I also enjoyed it immensely. This time spent with them gave me an enormous advantage over the other students in Arabic class when I took it in college. Tom and Mary are gifted teachers who truly care about the success of their students. Anyone thinking about studying Arabic could not go wrong with their teaching.

I wanted to pass my experience onto other parents that home educate or students that might like additional information to consider when thinking of studying a foreign language.
For many, Spanish or French may be the only foreign language you have thought about for high school credit. However, my daughter and son had an interest in learning Arabic, and the more I have learned about it, the more it has interested me. I can't help but think that it will be a wonderful language option for those considering a career in the military, government service, international business, or even the petroleum industry one day.
When searching for an Arabic teacher, our family specifically searched for one that was a Christian and could teach from the Christian world view. I am pleased to say we found an excellent teacher and our family has been taking lessons from Mary Laskoskie for over 6 years now. Both my daughter and son easily sailed through their 2 years of Arabic at Texas Tech University with A's after 3 years with Mary.
Mary Laskoskie is located in College Station Texas, and can tutor in person, or long distance via Skype. My son and daughter often had their lesson over Skype which is so convenient. Mary has some full-time students that use Skype as their only means of teaching and it works well. Mary has also taught Branson R. and Gus D., both students that entered our nations military academies. One went to Westpoint and the other student attending Annapolis. Both of these young men were taught exclusively through Skype.
Mary is originally from Jordan and taught in a Christian language school there, but has been in the U.S. for many years, with her husband that was a missionary to the Arabic people. He was raised in Hempstead, TX. She has also taught Arabic in the George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M. I have been impressed with her knowledge of all aspects of reading, writing, and speaking Arabic. She is very home school friendly and can work around our hectic schedules.
I know when I started out to look for a Christian language teacher that met all the qualities for which I was looking; I really would have liked to have a reference from a fellow home educator or anyone who had actually utilized a tutor for their student. It is for this reason that I have taken the time to put these comments together. It is my hope that some of you may find this information helpful for your home school student, or for yourself. Mary Laskoskie is an excellent resource and value for learning Arabic at any time of life!
